We either grow or thoughtfully source every ingredient in our balms, prioritizing relationships with local Montana farms and artisans whenever possible.
Many of the herbs that infuse our balms are grown on our Montana homestead. We partner with local apiaries for our beeswax and work with farm-raised fats sourced with care.
Every ingredient is chosen for integrity and skin affinity. We build our formulations on a foundation of traditional fats, each selected for its specific role in how a balm feels, absorbs, and performs.
While each product is different, our core materials include:
• Goat tallow — lightweight, skin-compatible, and especially suited for facial care
• Leaf lard — smooth and stable, offering structure and glide in balms designed for everyday and home use
• Farm-raised lamb tallow and traditional lard — durable, protective, and well-suited for hardworking skin and outdoor use
• Beeswax and unrefined butters — providing structure, balance, and lasting moisture
• Whole-plant herbal infusions — bringing the quiet complexity of the plants themselves into each blend

Slow-Infused, By Hand
Every herb is carefully selected for its traditional benefits and integrated into quietly powerful combinations.
We slow-infuse these whole, dried botanicals into our base oils, allowing the plant material to gradually release its compounds into the oil without degrading the delicate botanicals.
By infusing whole botanicals directly into oil, we create a more complete and gentle botanical profile designed to support the skin barrier with precision and depth formed by nature, gently and patiently.
Our Promise
Many commercial skincare products rely on concentrated extracts to make them effective. While these can work, they often require artificial ingredients like solvents, stabilizers, or higher concentrations that may be too active for compromised or highly sensitive skin.

What makes 4R Balms different from other tallow skincare?
4R balms are built around a carefully balanced foundation of ingredients selected for skin affinity, stability, and simplicity. Our products contain no fillers, no synthetic fragrance, and no unnecessary additives.
Each ingredient is chosen not only for how it supports the skin on its own, but for how it works within the whole—creating balms that feel both gentle and deeply effective.
Rather than relying on a single fat across every formula, we use a range of traditional fats, each selected for its specific role in how a balm absorbs, protects, and performs on the skin.
Goat tallow is often used in our facial formulations for its close compatibility with the skin’s natural barrier and its smooth, lightweight absorption.
Other formulas may incorporate traditional lard or additional tallow, offering structure, durability, and protection suited for everyday use and more demanding conditions.
These are balanced with unrefined butters, local beeswax, and our slow whole-plant herbal infusions—bringing together texture, stability, and botanical depth without relying on synthetic ingredients.
The result is a balm that is rich yet breathable, simple yet intentional, and crafted by hand in small batches on our Montana farm.
Are your products all-natural?
We formulate using whole-plant herbal infusions, farm-derived fats, and naturally occurring waxes and oils. All of our ingredients are locally-grown or responsibly sourced.
We avoid synthetic fragrance, petroleum derivatives, and unnecessary stabilizers. Each formula is intentionally simple and designed to work in harmony with the skin.
Are your products suitable for sensitive skin?
Our formulas are intentionally minimal and crafted with traditionally gentle herbs and skin-supportive fats.
However, we always recommend reviewing the full ingredient list and performing a patch test prior to use, especially if you have known sensitivities.
Do your balms contain Essential Oils?
A small number of our balms contain a restrained, intentional essential oil blend. Most of our balms are entirely essential oil–free and rely solely on whole-plant herbal infusions for scent and benefit.
Each product page clearly notes whether essential oils are included and which oils are present.
What is the return policy?
Because our balms and provisions are handcrafted in small batches using farm-grown and natural ingredients, all sales are final.
If your order arrives damaged, defective, or incorrect, please email info@4R.farm within 5 days of delivery with your order number and photos. We will gladly make it right.
