4R Farm: Field Notes 001 | Early Spring | Pigs, Bees & New Growth

Well, the pigs escaped again this week.

They pushed through the fence and made their way into the front yard before we finally noticed. It’s not every day I call my husband with a cryptic, “pigs in the front yard,” but he's pretty good at just rolling with it.

The pigs aren’t the only thing getting up and moving around here.

Spring is arriving in small moments.

I saw one of our honeybees flying this past Tuesday. I’m pretty sure it was George. Soon the foragers will be out in full force, working to restock what was used through the winter.

The 41 pounds of garlic we planted last fall from Antelope Creek Garlic here in Pony, Montana is quietly growing beneath the soil, while early daffodils are beginning to push through in a wave of green. Promises of yellow blooms are not far behind.

The chickens are happy with the warmer days and longer light. In the coming weeks, we’ll swap out their winter bedding for fresh pine shavings and straw. It’s our version of spring cleaning. We’ll also be adding a new batch of chicks this summer, hand-selected by our friend Haley, passionate chicken lady and trusted chicken picker, to expand the colors in our weekly egg deliveries around Madison and Gallatin counties.

We’re beginning to bring in herb starts and seeds for the season ahead. Growing our own herbs is part of what grounds everything we do - knowing each plant from its first days to its final use. It’s our hope that anyone who opens one of our balms can feel the care we have poured into what we’ve made.

The farm is waking up.

And it’s always worth pausing to notice it. The beauty of this place, the work, the laughter. It’s all wrapped up in the quiet promise of what’s coming next.

And as for those pigs…individual pork cuts coming soon.
